Control de Inglés

UIEX
Foreign Language Unit
STUDY SYSTEM

As in other areas, English standards are clear criteria that allow students and their families, teachers and educational institutions, to know what to learn. Also, they are used as a reference point to establish what students are able to learn about the language and what they should know to do with it in a certain context. The set of knowledge, skills, abilities and individual characteristics that allow a person to perform actions in a certain context is what defines the competencies. In the case of English it is expected to develop communicative competence.

Communicative competence includes:

> Linguistic competence. It refers to the knowledge of the formal resources of language as a system and the ability to use them in formulating well-formed and meaningful messages. It includes knowledge and lexical, phonological, syntactic and spelling, among others skills. This competition involves not only theoretical managing of grammatical, spelling or semantic concepts, but also their application in various situations. (For example, make associations to use the known vocabulary in another context or apply grammar rules learned from the creation of new posts).

> Pragmatic competence. It relates to functional use of language resources and comprising, firstly a discourse competence that regards the capacity to organize sentences in sequences to produce textual fragments. Second, it implies a functional competence for both linguistic forms and functions, such as how to string with each other in real communicative situations.

> Sociolinguistic competence. It refers to knowledge of social and cultural conditions that are implicit in the usage of language. For example, it is used to handle etiquette and other rules that order the relationships between generations, genders, social classes and groups. It also manages to get in touch with expressions of popular wisdom or register differences, dialect and accent.

> Communicative competence. It can not work in isolation as it implies a flexible know how knowledge, that updates in significative contexts and is supposes the ability to use the knowledge of the language in various situations, both in and out of student`s professional and academic life. For this reason, the proposal also includes developing skills and knowledge that relate to ethical, aesthetic, social and cultural development of the learned language. Beyond knowledge of isolated code, it is important to offer children, young people and professionals, real possibilities for understanding and interpreting reality.

> Developing these skills and knowledge allows students to expand their knowledge about the world, explore their social skills and learn about cultural aspects of the language learned.

The considerations above relate to the report Education encloses a treasure, presented by the International Commission on Education for the XXI century by the UNESCO. This document, which is proposed as pillars of education, "learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and learning to be" that allows to highlight the importance of working from the English class:

• Declarative knowledge. It is the derivatives, on one hand the experience and, on the other hand the formal learning, it means academic knowledge. They are joined by what could be called the "world knowledge" that includes values and beliefs shared by social groups from other countries and regions. For example, religious beliefs, taboos, history and traditions, among others, they are essential for intercultural communication.

• Skills and abilities. They include, on one hand, skills and practical skills (vital professional, sports, likes, hobbies, arts) and, on the other hand, intercultural, and the ability to relate, the sensitivity, the possibility of overcoming stereotyped relationships, etc..

• Personal knowledge. It covers the sum of individual characteristics, traits and attitudes that make up the personality and influence in the image we have of ourselves and others. It also refers to the willingness to engage in relationships with other people and includes, therefore, motivations, attitudes, values, beliefs and personality factors, among others.

• Ability to learn. It is conceived as the predisposition or the ability to discover what is different, whether it is a different language or culture, other people or new areas of knowledge. It also includes awareness of how language and communication, study skills and heuristic strategies work.

It is important to highlight that all these knowledge, skills and abilities develop, exist and are manifested close because they are intimately related. To illustrate this relationship just to see how, in the case of learning English or any foreign language, the development of communicative competence is only possible when developed, in parallel, other knowledge that students acquire in different areas of the curriculum and to give substance to their statements and when develop skills and abilities to interact naturally in school situations and the virtual university platform allows do what is mentioned.
